Art Synthesis

Art Synthesis

The Bishop Gallery is pleased to present “ART-SYNTHESIS:THE ART OF MEKBIB GEBERTSADIK” a solo exhibition by Howard University MFA graduate Mekbib Gebertsadik. Curated by cultural historian and Howard University alum Kathryn Coney-Ali, this exhibition introduces the extraordinary talent of Gebertsadik, who redefines landscape painting through innovative techniques. Gebertsadik’s unique approach to art merges science, spirituality, and nature. Inspired by the intricate process of photosynthesis, he meticulously manipulates water(paint), air, and gravity to craft landscapes that merge his Ethiopian heritage with his American experiences. What distinguishes Gebertsadik’s work is his brushless technique. He forges a spiritual connection with his canvases, allowing paint to flow freely without preconceived notions. He utilizes air and gravity, employing gentle blowing and tilting motions to create vibrant nature-inspired images that also spotlight environmental concerns. Within his paintings, Gebertsadik employs holistic approaches, combining abstractions, symbolism, and naturalism to produce original visual impressions of nature. Color plays a pivotal role in his works, with each hue holding significant meaning. Blue symbolizes the infiniteness of life, while orange represents the energetic spark of existence. The synergy of these colors reflects the harmony between the natural and spiritual worlds. Though now residing in the United States, Geberstsadik’s early memories of Ethiopia and its landscapes remain an integral part of his artistic identity. These memories guide his pursuit of capturing light and creating forms through the manipulation of flowing colors. This personal narrative of journey and connection across generations is artfully conveyed through his work- a testament to his evolution as an artist and a legacy he imparts to his daughters. It is Gebertsadik’s hope that this unique exploratory visual language and experience will inspire and instill hope in all who encounter it. “ART-SYNTHESIS: THE ART OF MEKBIB GEBERTSADIK serves as a bridge between humanity and the natural world inviting viewers to contemplate their relationship with the environment.

Mekbib Geberstadik

Mekbib Gebertsadik, a native son of Ethiopia, completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995 from the School of Fine Arts and Design at Addis Ababa University under the painting mentorship and
training of the renowned artist Ale Felege Selam (1924-2016). In 2001, Gebertsadik relocated to the United States where he continued his studies in fine arts. After obtaining a graduate certificate in graphic design from Gibbs College (Vienna, Virginia) his artistic endeavors led him to Howard University in Washington, D.C. to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in painting where the legendary Ethiopian artist Alexander “Skunder” Boghossian (1937-2003) taught for over 20 years. Gebertsadik’s artwork is internationally acclaimed and has been exhibited in the Netherlands, Belgium, various embassies, and cultural institutions as well as in the collection of many foreign institutions and dignitaries. Adding to his artistic repertoire, Gebertsadik has completed several public art commissions. The Ethiopian government has recognized his mastery of the visual arts and commissioned him to lead a community public art collaboration at his alma mater and the Ale School of Art and Design named for his mentor Ale Felege Selam in Addis Ababa.
