ETERNAL THREADS

ETERNAL THREADS

The Bishop Gallery is proud to present Eternal Threads, an evocative group exhibition that interlaces memory, identity, and materiality through the works of four dynamic women artists. Featuring Deona Lizette, Sharon Walters, Murjoni Merriweather, and Quiana Parks, the exhibition will be on view from March 22nd to April 26th, 2025.

Memory is not static; it is a living, evolving force, shaped by time, experience, and cultural inheritance. Eternal Threads explores this concept by showcasing artists who investigate how history is inscribed upon the body, embedded in material, and visualized through artistic intervention. Through painting, sculpture, and mixed media, these artists navigate the complexities of selfhood, revealing the tensions between personal and collective narratives.

Deona Lizette employs geometry and spatial illusion to construct multidimensional compositions that engage with notions of memory and presence. Rooted in woodworking and printmaking, her work transforms architectural forms into layered metaphors, examining how identity and experience take shape in both space and memory.

Sharon Walters’ practice examines identity, beauty standards, and race through intricate paper cutouts and hand-assembled collages. Suspended within glass, her delicate paper cuts cast shifting shadows, symbolizing the layered histories embedded in Black identity. Her work challenges exclusionary narratives, asserting Black communities’ rightful presence and visibility.

Murjoni Merriweather reclaims Black identity through her powerful sculptural practice, utilizing clay to challenge Eurocentric aesthetic norms while celebrating the beauty and depth of Black self-expression. Her sculptures serve as acts of historical reclamation and cultural empowerment, confronting stereotypes while honoring the richness of Black identity.

Quiana Parks creates vibrant mixed-media compositions that explore the intersection of cultural memory and personal narrative. Drawing upon her African American and Jamaican heritage, Parks examines identity as both a legacy and an evolving story, weaving together moments of joy, struggle, and resilience.

Eternal Threads presents a critical discourse on the ways in which identity is woven from experience, history, and materiality. Through their work, these artists reveal memory as an ever-shifting force—one that both shapes and is shaped by our histories, continuously redefining our sense of self and community.

The exhibition will open with a reception on March 22nd, 2025, at 6 PM, followed by a panel discussion on April 19th, 2025, where the artists and a moderator will explore the conceptual and material threads that connect their work.
