James Phillips (Born 1945) received his M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He is currently a Professor of Painting in the Department of Art, Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University. Phillips is renowned for his complex rhythmic geometric abstraction referenced as Afro-motif art. As a part of his spiritual consciousness, the pursuit of his ancestral heritage is the driving force behind his artwork. He seamlessly incorporates African patterns and designs into his compositions, blending foreground and background to create a unified design. In 1970, Phillips joined the artists collective Weusi Nyumba ya Sanaa (The Weusi Artist Collective) during this period his work was influenced by artists and friends such as Ademola Olugebefola, Skunder Boghossian, and Wadsworth Jarrell. A few years later he moved to Washington, D.C. for an artist-in-residency at Howard University’s art department in 1973. During this early period at Howard, Phillips's involvement in the Blacks Arts Movement was not only magnified as a member of Howard’s art faculty but also as a member of the historic The African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists, AfriCobra. He would join AfriCoBRA artists faculty at Howard University such as Jeff Donaldson, Wadsworth Jarrell, and Frank Smith. In his works, Phillips introduces “…Black Arts aesthetics with contemporary aspects of popular culture,” which is meant to be seen in private and public spaces. He is passionate about art in public spaces with public art projects completed in cities such as Baltimore, Washington, DC, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The artwork of James Phillips has been exhibited both nationally and internationally as well as is highly sought after and collected by private collectors and institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, Whitney Museum, Smithsonian National African American Museum History and Culture, Minnesota Institute of Art, Library of Congress, Howard University and Hampton University.
