SULA PLAYING IN THE DARK

SULA PLAYING IN THE DARK

The Bishop Gallery is pleased to present Sula Playing in the Dark, a group exhibition featuring ten women and non-binary artists in a multi-media installation, curated by Dr. Margarita Lila Rosa. Featuring themes of pole and nightlife, feminine extravagance and luxury, and women’s emotional inferiorities, the exhibition Sula Playing in the Dark is marked by an attention to traditions of beauty and survival among women at the margins.

Sula Playing in the Dark foregrounds feminine freedom through the fictional protagonist of Toni Morrison’s novel Sula. In the novel, Sula’s diversion from societal norms, marked by her unabashed freedom, causes the communities around her to push her out. The group exhibition Sula Playing in the Dark presents artworks on the theme of unabashed feminine freedom. In this exhibition, an exploration of feminine play and freedom is central.

Playing in the Dark is another book by Toni Morrison, where the late author explores how Black contributions became central to the definition of American, while always being represented at White. In this exhibition, an exploration of subcultures, genres, and mediums is emphasized. The artists in this show are Amelia Briggs, Rocio Delaloye, Bianca Fields, Amaryllis Flowers, Maiya Hartman, Yolanda Hoskey, Amy Hussein, Liliana Rasmussen, Marisol Ruiz, and Jérai Wilson. The exhibition will run from June 8 to July 27, 2024.
