The Bishop Gallery is honored to announce the long-awaited return of artist James Phillips to his birthplace, Brooklyn, New York, with the opening of “Vibrations” - A survey of James Phillips illustrious career. This remarkable showcase marks Phillips’s second solo exhibition in his hometown since 1968, celebrating over 50 years of his esteemed career and artistic contributions to the world.

A long-time friend and colleague of Phillips, Art Historian Kathryn Coney-Ali frames this exhibition as a testament to the artist’s profound legacy. Coney-Ali remarks, “James’ artistry articulates a legacy of conceptual reimagining of the universe which is revolutionary and unrestricted.” At the heart of Phillips’s art are dynamic themes of African mythology and storytelling, woven together with improvisational musicality, creating a deeply personal spiritual narrative. Phillips’s artwork conveys a metaphysical and social-political state of being, representing a spiritual continuum of power, cultural transition, and a legacy of artistic innovation. “Vibrations”, is a captivating journey into the unique artistic universe seamlessly merging art, politics, and culture, Phillips’s work celebrates the integral aspects of African and African-American traditions through complex optical Afrofuturistic rhythmic compositions. His aesthetic prowess comes to life through vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and a mesmerizing repetition of lines and shapes, creating motifs and symbols that provide a multi-dimensional experience.

“Vibrations” presents personally selected artworks by the artist that reference a higher level of cosmological order utilized by ancient Africans in their understanding of magic as a phenomenon of power to manipulate nature and create a universal frequency or vibration of energy.

James Phillips (Born 1945) received his M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He is currently a Professor of Painting in the Department of Art, Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University. Phillips is renowned for his complex rhythmic geometric abstraction referenced as Afro-motif art. As a part of his spiritual consciousness, the pursuit of his ancestral heritage is the driving force behind his artwork. He seamlessly incorporates African patterns and designs into his compositions, blending foreground and background to create a unified design.
